The Nintendo Switch error code 2101-0001 is certainly annoying, but it is usually easy to diagnose and fix. This specific error code is a critical one, relating to communication issues between the Switch software and the M92T36 (the Switch’s power management chip). Regardless of whether you see visible damage, the first step is to remove the USB-C port. Replacement ports cost around $1 on AliExpress, and since this issue has occurred, replacing the port is the best course of action.
Keep in mind that the Nintendo Switch USB-C port has a row of hidden pins. Be careful! Repairing traces on the Switch port assembly is not easy, and damage can occur quite easily.
Error Code: 2101-0001
This error code is usually caused by the M92T36 chip. 2101-0001 indicates an error on the I2C bus. In most cases, the M92 chip itself is defective. In some instances, the issue may stem from a faulty charging cable, excessive force, or accidental damage during cable insertion or removal. This error rarely occurs spontaneously without an underlying cause. Since it is a hardware-related (critical) error code, replacing the component is your only option.

Diagnostic Steps
After removing the port, use a multimeter in diode or continuity mode to test if the M92T36 capacitors are shorted to ground. If there is no short circuit, the issue might simply be the port itself; try soldering on a new port and testing the device. If you find a short circuit on the M92T36, replace that IC. The 2101-0001 error almost always involves the port or the IC. Even if the M92T36 looks fine, you might still encounter issues; the M92T36 does not always show obvious signs of failure. While the motherboard is still out of the housing, check the other side (Side A) of the board for any short circuits around the P13USB chip. If the capacitor on top is shorted, the P13USB chip must also be removed and replaced.
After replacing the M92T36, the P13USB, or both, you can test the console before installing the new port. This is usually the approach I prefer.
Repair Steps
I personally find the safest method is to remove any nozzle from the hot air station. Set the temperature to 480°C with an airflow of about 40% (40 L/min) and position the wand directly over the port at a 90-degree angle. After about 60 seconds, you will notice the lead-free solder beginning to melt. Do not lift the port yet! Gently nudge the port with tweezers while continuing to apply heat until it moves freely. Once it moves freely, wait another 5–10 seconds before slowly lifting the port away. This might seem like overkill, but spending an extra 30–60 seconds now can save you 60–90 minutes of work later. Do not bend the board, yank the port, or try to force it off. Take extra care to avoid a world of pain—I’ve seen what happens when things go wrong!
Be extremely careful when removing the USB-C port.
Regardless of its appearance, the USB-C port must be replaced.
After installation, be sure to clean the inside of the port using a soft tool, such as a small cotton swab or a soft toothbrush; there will inevitably be flux residue inside.
Always clean all flux residue off the motherboard after performing component-level repairs. Leaving flux residue behind can cause corrosion on the motherboard over time.
Ensure the console charges using both the official Nintendo Switch charger (15V) and a standard 5V charger (by flipping the cable over).
After replacing the port, verify that the console docks correctly with the TV. If it doesn’t, the installation might be incorrect; re-soldering the port usually fixes this issue.
After the repair, ensure the console successfully switches to fast charging. After the repair, perform comprehensive system testing, including display, audio, charging, power, dock functionality, Joy-Con connectivity (wired and wireless), Wi-Fi connectivity, touchscreen functionality, and game reading/gameplay (using physical game cartridges, not digital downloads).
If you are a repair shop, it is recommended to advise the customer to replace their charging cable as well. Failure to replace the cable could result in the device suffering renewed damage due to the customer’s faulty accessory, potentially leading to a new warranty claim.
