After pressing the power button, the blue power LED starts to dim, but it turns off after about a second.
The 3DS attempts to power on when the power button is pressed, but automatically powers off.
There may be a noticeable popping sound when the blue power LED turns off.
When powering off, the blue power LED either dims gracefully or turns off immediately.
The problem may be intermittent, but it will trigger more frequently over time.
The solution largely depends on whether it is caused by a software or hardware issue.
If the power LED dims slowly, it is almost always a software problem.
However, if the power LED turns off immediately after fading to blue (especially with a loud popping sound), it is usually a hardware malfunction.
Does the hinge position (open, half-open, closed) affect whether the 3DS powers off?
If so, the flexible cable connecting the top screen component is damaged, which is a hardware problem.
Does the power LED (blue light) turn off immediately? The fade-in and fade-out times are roughly the same, so the difference is easy to distinguish.
If the power indicator dims slowly and gradually, it is a software problem.
If the power indicator light goes out immediately, it’s usually a hardware problem.

Eject Game Cartridges
Some unauthorized game cartridges may cause excessive current, or even short-circuit cartridge pins, due to loose cartridge casing tolerances and missing pin alignment rails.

Ejecting the cartridge should always be one of the first steps when diagnosing problems, regardless of whether it’s authorized or not!
Eject SD Card
In rare cases, the SD card may short-circuit (especially a microSD card), so it’s recommended to remove it as a precaution.
Software Repair Steps
Check SD Card
If the system has been software-modified, it may require an SD card with the correct files to boot. If the system is definitely not software-modified, you can directly eject the SD card and skip this step.
If the SD card pins are dirty, the system may not recognize it.
If the SD card containing the necessary files cannot be found, the software-modified bootloader will indicate an error by gracefully shutting down the system.
Eject the SD card from the system.
Gently clean the pins, making sure not to scratch other parts of the SD card (especially if it’s a microSD card), and do not bend or pull off the pins.
Reinsert the SD card.

It may take several ejections and reinsertations before the SD card is detected.

If the microSD eject mechanism is stuck (the 3DS eject slot is a microSD slot, not a full-size SD slot), remove the microSD card while inserting it, and then reinsert it without moving the eject mechanism. However, be careful not to break the microSD card in half, as it may be too stubborn to remove!
If none of the above works, the SD card may be formatted incorrectly, or important boot files may be missing.

If you have modified the contents of your SD card, be sure to back them up first!
It *must* be FAT32, and the sector size must be between 512 and 32768 (inclusive).
Depending on the type of software modification, one of the following files must be present and valid:
/boot.firm (applies to software modifications using boot9strap (“b9s”) or fastboot3DS (“fb3DS”))
/arm9loaderhax.bin (applies if using the arm9loaderhax software modification)
Hardware Repair Steps
The system will only shut down with the power LED on if a component is short-circuited or open.
Causes:
Upper or lower screen backlight is on
Almost always due to a bent or damaged monitor (upper screen) or sometimes a bent or damaged backlight (lower screen).
Upper or lower screen backlight short circuit
Usually due to a damaged monitor or circuit board (display connector, water damage, etc.).
A high-voltage (+10V, -15V) short circuit in the top or bottom screen may be caused by a bent or cracked display panel or other damage. Both top and bottom screens are open. This is almost always due to a damaged monitor hose or connector, or a missing/poorly connected LCD connector. A separate power rail short circuit may also occur for unknown reasons, usually due to board damage (water damage?). Some data cables may be shorted to the power cord or GND for an extended period. This is unknown and could be caused by a bent or damaged camera, but in rare cases, by a bent or damaged monitor.
One of the speakers is open-circuited, or its connection to the CODEC chip is broken. It’s unclear why this caused the emergency shutdown. It shouldn’t have happened, but it did.
Possible diagnostics and repairs:
Check the flexible cables of the top screen assembly. If the cables are faulty or the monitor itself is damaged, replace them.
Check the bottom screen backlight. If the display, monitor flex cable, or backlight flex cable is faulty, replace or repair the monitor.
Check the flexible cable connectors for the display, backlight, and camera on the motherboard. If the connectors are damaged or appear abnormally unhealthy, replace them.
First, check for water damage, especially near the cable connectors and PMIC area.
Check the speakers and their cables for damage and proper function. They should make a “pop” or hissing sound before the system shuts down in an emergency.
