Disc Not Rotating: The disc is not rotating, causing it to be unreadable. Confirm the disc rotation motor is not stuck. If your Wii supports GameCube discs, try this; otherwise, refer to the following steps. Confirm you can see the laser moving back and forth, and confirm you can see the red laser. If you cannot see the red laser, replace the laser. If the laser does not move back and forth, replace the laser stepper motor. If you can see the red laser and it moves back and forth, be sure to clean it with isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. If it still doesn’t work, replace the laser. Note: A faulty laser may cause the software disc motor to not rotate.

Wii Does Not Accept GameCube Discs; GC Disk Won’t Eject: GameCube discs cannot be correctly inserted and inserted into the Wii optical drive. This is mainly due to a bent top drive cover, preventing the plastic mechanism from returning to the GameCube disc size, or dust, dirt, or other debris causing the mechanism to jam. Please clean or replace it.

The laser appears to work, but cannot read discs. The laser appears to work visually, but the discs cannot be read (i.e., the laser moves back and forth, the visual effect is good). Verify the laser POT voltage with an ohmmeter; 600 ohms is ideal. Adjustments are very slow; turning 1/8 of a turn may increase the voltage by 100 ohms or more. If the laser POT voltage is below 600 ohms, but the reading is still abnormal, and it has been cleaned with isopropyl alcohol (preferably 99%) and cotton swabs, the laser should be replaced.

Dual-layer discs cannot be read. Dual-layer discs (i.e., Super Smash Bros. or 12 other games) cannot be read. When verifying the laser POT with an ohmmeter, 600 ohms is ideal (especially for dual-layer discs). Adjustments are very slow; turning 1/8 of a turn may increase the voltage by 100 ohms or more. Clean the laser lens with isopropyl alcohol and replace it with a cotton swab. If the laser still cannot be read, replace it and test again.

The optical drive shows no signs of life. It makes no sound and shows no signs of functioning (e.g., the sound of the disc motor during startup, the sound of inserting a disc, etc.). Verify that the power and data connections from the Wii to the optical drive are even and correct. If the connections are correct, carefully inspect the motherboard for missing MCCs (monocell capacitors), bent/damaged pins on the chips, corrosion, or any other damage. Be sure to check carefully. If the visual inspection is normal, you can replace the motherboard, or check the continuity of the power or data pins from the Wii to the optical drive based on your judgment. When replacing the circuit board, loosen the two Phillips screws connecting the board and the optical drive, disconnect the disc motor cable, laser cable, and disc insertion sensor cable from the motherboard, desolder the hard drive insertion motor cable (red and brown), and desolder the laser stepper motor cable (white, blue, gray, and yellow) – remember to record the correct desoldering order, and then replace them in reverse order.

A noisy optical drive. The optical drive makes a lot of noise and may not be working properly. Disassemble and clean the optical drive, checking for any moving parts (such as the laser motor or disc insertion motor and their connections). The problem may be caused by dust, debris, foreign objects, or insufficient lubrication of the tracks. This can be difficult to diagnose and repair.
