Solution for Steam Deck black screen due to battery depletion and charging but unable to power on again A few days ago, I played the Steam Deck until it was down to 7% battery and then left it alone. The next day, I found that it wouldn’t power on, so I assumed it might be out of battery and charged it. After charging for several hours, it still wouldn’t power on.
After searching online, it seems that this is not an isolated case, but rather a bug in Steam Deck. Of course, I also found the correct solution during the search process.
Recently, I put my Steam Deck into sleep mode when the battery was at 5% and turned it back on after three days. However, the issue recurred.
I speculate that this bug is simply caused by low battery sleep, but this issue cannot be reliably reproduced at present.
Fault description
When the battery is suspected to be nearly depleted, it enters sleep mode. After a period of time:
If you press the power button, the white light flashes, and no other hardware responds. This is a normal signal indicating that the battery is fully drained.
If the power is plugged in, the white light stays on, there is a power-on sound, the screen has no response, the fan speed remains constant at maximum, the touchpad vibrates in response, but the system cannot be entered. At this time, you can force a shutdown by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.
However, after charging for a period of time, pressing the power button again still fails to turn on the device, regardless of whether the power cord is plugged in. Additionally, plugging in the power cord when the device is turned off automatically attempts to power on and enter the system, but the situation remains the same as described above.
Specific solutions:
First, manually enter the Steam Deck battery storage mode using physical buttons:
Remove the power cable and press and hold the power button for more than 10 seconds to ensure that the Steam Deck is completely turned off.
Insert the power cord into the Steam Deck. At this point, the white light will be continuously on, the fan speed will be constant at maximum, and the touchpad will have a vibrating response. However, the system cannot be entered (i.e., the original fault persists).
Keep the power cord plugged in and press and hold the power button for more than 10 seconds to ensure that the Steam Deck is completely turned off.
After turning off the device, simultaneously press and hold the “Volume Up” and “···” buttons for more than 10 seconds.
Keep holding the button from step 4 and use your foot or mouth to remove the power cord (yes).
If you perform the operation correctly, you should see the power white light flashing 3 times, after which the device should no longer respond to any presses of the power button.
In step 3, holding the power button for too long will initiate the startup process of the Steam Deck. To avoid this, simply release the power button once you notice a change in the brightness of the white light, the fan stops, and the touchpad becomes unresponsive (as if it has already shut down).
If you don’t release it at this point, the startup process will commence, and subsequent operations will be akin to those performed when the device is powered on.
At this point, the Steam Deck has entered battery storage mode. Next, you need to wake it up from battery storage mode. The operation is very simple: just plug in the power cord and wait for it to automatically power on.
Regarding battery storage mode
Refer to the “Long-term Storage” section in Steam Customer Service :: Steam Deck – Basic Usage and Troubleshooting Guide. If the user will not be using the Steam Deck for a period of time and wishes to put it in storage mode to improve its long-term battery health, they can enable the battery storage mode. To wake up the Steam Deck from storage mode, plug in the provided external power source and then start it up normally.
