Playstation 4 Pro has no picture and no sound

When connected to a TV, the console displays no image or sound.

Diagnostic Steps: The most common problem causing the PS4 Pro to fail to display any image is the HDMI port or the HDMI encoding IC.

Check the HDMI connector for bent pins, debris, or physical damage.

Check the connection between the HDMI port and the motherboard for torn pads or broken solder joints.

If you have a Mozzwald HDMI adapter and a Mechanic Mechanic T-824, you can compare your port readings with a reliable one.

Check the chokes between the HDMI encoder and the HDMI port.

There are four chokes between the encoder and the HDMI port.

A total of eight data lines pass through these chokes (each choke carries two data signals). The chokes must be connected in parallel and continuous, but not crossed.

Check the area around the MN864729 chip for damage, such as liquid damage or physical damage (cracks, holes).

Check surrounding components for short circuits.

Check if the HDMI circuit is missing voltage. A properly functioning HDMI circuit must have these voltages when the host is powered on.

Replacing the HDMI Connector

The simplest way to replace the HDMI connector is using the “hot-swap” method. Heat the connector from below until the solder becomes liquid, then lift the old connector and install the new one while the solder is still liquid.

After soldering the new connector, ensure each pin is properly connected to the motherboard pads.

Ensure the solder is fully submerged in water at the anchor points on the top and bottom of the motherboard.

Both the PS4 Slim and Pro use HDMI connectors.

Heat the solder joints of the old choke using a hot air reinstallation station. Heat evenly until the solder melts, then gently remove the choke coil with tweezers.

After removing the choke coil, clean the old solder from the pads with a soldering iron and solder tip.

Apply a small amount of solder to the cleaned motherboard pads.

Adjust the new choke and heat it (use a low airflow to avoid the choke coil falling off). As the solder under the choke coil melts, surface tension will pull the component back into place.

The HDMI circuitry of both the PS4 Slim and Pro uses the same choke coil.

Replacing the HDMI Encoder (MN864729)

Desoldering the Old Chip:

If available, install a motherboard preheater to heat the motherboard, as this requires significant heat.

Heat the MN864729 chip from above using a hot air gun or soldering iron. Heat for a few seconds until the factory solder begins to melt.

Gently push away any debris with tweezers. If it moves, it’s ready to be lifted.

While the motherboard is still hot, clean the old solder from the motherboard pads with solder and a soldering iron.

Preparing the Motherboard and New Chip:

Apply a thin layer of new solder to the cleaned motherboard pads. Avoid over-soldering, especially the center square.

Pre-solder the pads of the new MN864729 chip with a small amount of solder to ensure good contact.

Soldering the New Chip:

Align the new chip with the motherboard. Align the dots on the chip with the small triangle markings on the motherboard for proper positioning.

Heat the chip from above using a hot air gun. Observe whether the solder has melted, which can be judged by slight chip movement.

Gently touch the chip with tweezers to allow surface tension to stabilize it. Avoid using excessive force.

Inspection and Cleaning:

Inspect all connections with a microscope. Ensure there are no solder bridges between pins.

If any connection appears faulty, gently touch the affected pads with a soldering iron, resolder, and correct.

Both the PS4 Slim and Pro use the same HDMI encoder.

Final Testing: Basic Display and Sound Tests:

Connect the console to a TV or monitor using a high-quality HDMI cable.

Power on the console to confirm correct picture and sound output.

Check for clear, unblemished, flickering, or distorted images, and confirm that audio transmission is problem-free.

Automatic Resolution Detection Function:

Ensure the console automatically detects and sets the appropriate resolution.

Test switching between different resolution settings (e.g., 1080p, 4K) to confirm that the HDMI encoder handles it correctly.

4K Display Test:

Connect the PS4 Pro to a TV or monitor that supports 4K resolution and 60Hz.

Launch 4K-enabled games or applications to verify that the console outputs a stable 4K image without stuttering, black screens, or signal loss.
